no one else is going to love me when i get mad, mad, mad.

Okay, asking somebody how long they believed in Santa Claus is so stupid. You can't even consider the topic suitable for idle conversation. But if you still wanna know how long I believed in some old fat guy who wears a funky red suit, I can tell you this: I've never believed in him, ever. The Santa that showed up at my kindergarten Christmas festival, I knew he was fake. And I never saw mommy kissing Santa or anything. But I have to say, that even as a little kid, I knew better than to believe in some old man who worked one day a year.

Now, having said that, it wasn't til I got older that I realized that aliens, time travelers, ghosts, monsters, espers, the evil syndicates and the anime/manga/fantasy flick heroes that fight said evil syndicates, were also fake. Okay, I guess I always knew those things were bogus, I just didn't wanna admit it. All I ever wanted was for an alien, time traveler, ghost, monster, esper, evil syndicate, or the hero that fought them to just appear and say "Hey".

Unfortunately, reality is a hard road indeed. Yep, you gotta admit, the laws of physics definitely put a damper on things. I even stopped watching those TV shows about aliens and ghosts and stuff. Aliens, time travelers, espers; of course they don't exist, but a little part of me wishes that they did. I guess I've grown up and realized I can think about those things and still accept reality. But by the time I got out of junior high, I pretty much outgrew that kind of stuff and I guess I got used to the idea of living in an ordinary world. Just like that, I was in high school...

that's when I met her.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is a paranormal romance about a manic-depressive high school demigod and the normal human boy charged with saving the world from her moods.

Okay, that's an oversimplification.

The story follows the narrator and protagonist Kyon, a cynical and smart-mouthed student entering high school, who is dragged along by the title character, his classmate Haruhi Suzumiya. She is an eccentric girl seeking supernatural phenomena and figures such as aliens, time travelers and espers. She establishes, with his reluctant help, a club to investigate mysterious events, the SOS Brigade, and recruits three additional members: the laconic bibliophile Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the friendly transfer student Itsuki Koizumi. These members soon reveal themselves to Kyon as the extraordinary characters Haruhi is seeking, who is unaware of her destructive reality warping power; they have been sent by their various organizations to observe her and prevent these powers from being unleashed, leaving to Kyon the task of maintaining for Haruhi the illusion of a normal life.

The first season of the anime in particular is a viewing experience I wouldn't want to ruin for anyone - while the second season chose to play it somewhat safe imho (Endless Eight does not count as a risk, I don't care how many death threats they got as a result!), the first season takes some directing risks and results in a really interesting approach to storytelling. The important thing is how much the series rotates on the relationship between Haruhi and Kyon, in particular Kyon's resonance with Haruhi's sorrow and their mutual determination to find something special about the dull world they think they live in; while I set out to make a general series fst, before I knew it I had eighteen tracks just about the two of them. No regrets.

Suzumiya Haruhi, Kyon, and the Melancholy belong to Tanigawa Nagaru, Kadokawa Shoten, and Kyoani. Music belongs to its respective artists. Cover art belongs to someone, I'm sure, but I got it on tumblr and it was unsourced; any direction to the artist would be appreciated.

Individual tracks are listed below with relevant lyrics, there is a zip file with high quality cover-art (title text available and not available) included at the bottom of the post, or you could always opt to skip the bullshit and

These scattered flashes of delight can't help but sway your mind.

4. "sky in your eyes", new model army

You breaking new doors; what'cha think you looking for?

7. "are you satisfied?", marina and the diamonds

People like to tell you what you're gonna be, it's not my problem if you don't see what I see. And I do not give a damn if you don't believe. My problem, it's my problem that I never am happy; it's my problem, it's my problem on how fast I will succeed.

Sad inside; in this life, unsatisfied waiting. Are you satisfied with an average life?

8. "back and forth", obits

Nobody knows where you go after school. All the cruel, cruel things you do with friends: how will you keep this sorrow to yourself?

9. "pinch me", barenaked ladies

10. "landscape (demo)", florence + the machine

She can't see the landscape anymore; it's all painted in her grief. All of her history etched out at her feet. Now all of the landscape, it's just an empty place; acres of longing, mountains of tenderness. 'Cause she's just like the weather, can't hold her together.

[ instrumental ]

16. "parentheses", the blow

If something in the deli aisle makes you cry, you know I’ll put my arm around you and I'll walk you outside through the sliding doors; why would I mind? You're not a baby if you feel the world. All of the babies can feel the world. That's why they cry.

17. "on the planet earth", danielle ate the sandwich

Well, there are over six billion people on the planet earth, and I am one and you are another. And every second that we spend together brings us closer to where we'll end up.

18. "stay stay stay", taylor swift

You took the time to memorize me: my fears, my hopes, and dreams. I just like hangin' out with you, all the time! All those times that you didn't leave; it's been occurring to me I'd like to hang out with you, for my whole life. Stay, and I'll be loving you for quite some time. No one else is going to love me when I get mad, so I think that it's best if we both stay.

I actually have most of these songs already, but I wanted to comment anyway because I loved that first season and I still spazz over Haruhi/Kyon. ♥
